WHY FACTORY LEAF SPRING SUSPENSIONS NEED ENHANCEMENTS?
OEM vehicle manufacturers are under cost pressure, therefore factory leaf springs are produced on the lowest cost possible. This leads to several compromises on performance and ride quality.
Factory leaf spring suspensions are optimised for standard (average) conditions. This way the vehicle ride is optimal without significant load. Once the vehicle is fully loaded or eventually overloaded, leaf spring suspension is not able to sustain its function; the vehicle will sit on its bump stop.
In several cases additional equipment is installed on commercial vehicles (e.g.: crane, cooling unit, machines, tools, etc.) and vehicle suspension needs to be upgraded to level the vehicle.
Many vehicles have a single leaf (mono leaf) spring providing linear spring characteristics instead of progressive one.
Leaf springs will loose some stiffness after a few years.
1. REINFORCEMENT KITS (ADD A LEAF KITS)
Additional spring leaf is added to factory leaf spring, longer center bolts and longer U-bolts are mounted. Though the leaf kit might be purchased on low price, installation is a rather big job and can be expensive. Springtech reinforcement kits are designed to fit perfectly to factory leaf springs.
2. HELPER SPRING KITS (MAXI-LOAD)
Additional spring (helper spring) is installed between axle (leaf spring) and frame. Springtech offers its own unique solution Maxi-Load; natural vulcanised hollow rubber helper spring is fixed to frame after removing factory bump stop. The helper spring works together with factory leaf spring as a complementary suspension part (spring assistant). Spring force can be set at installation with spacers. 3. AIR SPRING KITS
Air spring is installed between axle (leaf spring) and frame. Air spring is fixed to both frame and axle, therefore it reduces total vertical travel of axle. Air spring needs airlines, compressor, pressure gauge and other parts, therefore installation and maintenance can be complicated. This is the most expensive and sophisticated suspension enhancement solution and recommended only if rear level of vehicle has to be adjusted regularly.
